To immegrate from 100GBASE into 400GBASE, the QSFP28 100G PAM4 DR1/FR1 Single Lambda optics is designed to replace the previous 100G AOC/SR4/PSM4 optic in the layer of TOR to Leaf. QSFP28 100G PAM4 DR1/FR1 offers 100GBASE high bandwidth for server access and the parallel uplinks with 400GBASE PAM4 DR4/FR4 using the MTP to 4 LC breakout cable.

The Arista compatible QSFP28 100G FR1 Transceivers can be plugged into any Arista 100G QSFP port and interoperate with Arista 7388X5 & 7368x4 leaf/spine data center switch platform.The electrical connector interface is 4 * 25G NRZ, the same as all existing legacy QSFP28 100G modules. But, not like 100G CWDM4, mux/demux 4 * 25G NRZ optical signal into one fiber, the QSFP28 100G FR1 Transceivers uses a gearbox chip to convert the 4 * 25G NRZ electrical signals into a 1 * 100G PAM4 optical signal and couple into the single wavelength laser (or "lambda") for transmission. Due to different optical modulation, QSFP28 100G FR1 modules will not interoperate with legacy 100G CWDM4 lite module.

The Top-Trans QSFP28 100G PAM4 FR1 optics uses single lambda signal of 50GBaud on 1310nm center wavelength and support the link lengths of up to 2km via G.652 single mode fiber. The Top-Trans QSFP28 100G PAM4 FR1 optics uses PAM4 optical modulation and FEC and is fully compliant with MSA QSFP28 100GBASE-FR.
